Scout Patch Program

The Naperville Area Humane Society pleased to offer the Pet Care Pal & Safety Patch Program! Scout troops are welcome to visit the shelter and learn about the mission and work of NAHS. The scouts will learn things like how to be safe around animals, how to properly care for a pet, the importance of having proper identification on pets, and many other ways to be a pet advocate.

The NAHS Scout program consists of a 60min workshop that includes a tour, interactive lesson, and shelter animal visit. The group leader can download a PDF of our Scout Leader Guides on our website where each scout level can do a variety of age-appropriate activities for the group to do on their own, either before or after the workshop. At the end of the workshop, each scout will have the opportunity to purchase a NAHS patch for $5 to show their commitment to helping the animals of NAHS and being a pal to all pets!

If you would like to do more, your troop may add a group volunteering opportunity. This will come with an additional fee or the donation of supplies.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an age limit?

  • Yes, this is a youth program designed for scout programs and serves ages K-12 only. While they will be supervised by an adult we do require 2 adult chaperones attend to help supervise the children. Parents/guardians will need to pick up and drop off their kids. This is a great time for parents/guardians to get some errands done or enjoy an hour to themselves!

What should my child wear?

  • We recommend clothes they don’t mind getting dirty.  Shoes must be closed-toe (no crocs or sandals) and you must wear pants, no shorts or skirts please.

Will we get to pet animals?

  • Yes, we do reserve some time for animal interaction. However, we cannot guarantee participants will be able to directly interact with a dog or cat. That is based on volunteer and animal availability, as well as the well-being of our animals. We reserve the right to stop any animal interaction at any time due to health or safety concerns.

Why is there a cost?

  • The program fee covers the expenses of staff time, resources and patches as well as a small source of revenue for NAHS, a non-profit organization that depends on donations to operate.

Can we bring donations?

  • Of course! We will gladly accept any donations you have collected or purchased. Please see our wish list for our current needs.
